Lake Region Testing Laboratories
Kenya Bureau of Standards Lake Region covers ten (10) counties in western parts of Kenya namely Kisumu, Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Siaya, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira and Transmara counties. The Lake Region Testing laboratories have been established to offer laboratory services for conformity assessment as mandated by law and private testing for external customers.
The Lake Region Testing Services comprises three laboratories based at the headquarters in Kisumu and two satellite laboratories based at Busia One Stop Border Point (OSBP) on the Kenya Uganda border and Isebania OSBP on the Kenya Tanzania border. The Chemistry, Food & Agriculture and Microbiology laboratories are all based in Kisumu.
The laboratory tests a variety of products, including, but not limited to, food products such as dried vegetables, sugar, molasses, black tea, tomato products, dairy products, cereals and cereal products, fish and fishery products, eggs, fruit juices etc.; alcoholic beverages; drinking water; fertilizers; lubricants, detergents & soaps (such as bathing soaps, toilet soap, and washing bars), liquid detergents (like dishwashing and general-purpose detergents), cement, lime among others. These tests are conducted using standard methods, laboratory developed methods and state-of-the-art equipment. The laboratory is accredited to ISO 17025 in chemistry, food & agriculture and microbiology test methods for various scopes.
The laboratory also coordinates interlaboratory testing in different sample matrices such as water, flour and cement to support quality practices in testing laboratories locally and regionally.
