Reference Materials

A reference material (RM) is a material that is sufficiently homogeneous and stable with respect to one or more specified properties, which has been established to be fit for its intended use in a measurement process. Properties in this case can be quantitative (numerical) or qualitative, e.g., identity of a substance or species.

Reference material is important because it provides a reliable and standardized basis for comparison, allowing researchers and analysts to accurately measure and validate their results by ensuring consistency and traceability in their data, particularly when:

  • calibrating instruments,
  • comparing analytical methods,
  • validating methods,
  • validating laboratory and analysts’ competence,
  • estimation of uncertainty of measurement, and
  • assessing the quality of measurements across different laboratories or studies.

Types of KEBS Reference Materials

Type A RM: Based on the consensus mean from proficiency testing, excluding statistical outliers for a robust average.
Type B RM: Derived from the consensus mean of six or more select reference laboratories in a PTP.
Type C RM: Certified using traceable standards from national standards bodies, ensuring the highest level of accuracy and traceability.

KEBS is offering the following reference materials to industry for calibration of gas chromatographs (GCs) and microbiological reference cultures:

  1. Six level calibration solutions for Ethanol in aqueous media.
  2. Six level calibration solutions for Methanol in aqueous media.
  3. Six level calibration solutions for Ethylacetate in aqueous media.
  4. Six level calibration solutions for Amyl alcohol in aqueous media.
  5. Six level calibration solutions for isopropyl alcohol in aqueous media.
  6. Two levels internal standard solution (propanol) in aqueous media.
  7. Microbiological reference cultures.
