Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory

The Lab plays a role in ensuring product quality and safety by testing food, water, chemicals, metals and materials against Kenya Standards, regional standards (EAC), and international benchmarks like ISO, Codex, ASTM, and others. We support both internal KEBS departments (Product Certification, Quality Inspection, Market Surveillance and Standards Development) and external clients. Our services also extend to research and development, chemical metrology, training and proficiency testing.

The lab has the following testing units:

Wet Chemistry Laboratory

Uses classical methods like titrimetric, gravimetry and volumetric analysis for bulk constituent and major ion analysis.
Key tests include acid-base titrations, redox reactions, complexometric titrations and colorimetric tests.
Handles sample digestion with strong acids for trace element analysis.
Quality is ensured through reagent standardization, spike recoveries, and method validation.

Electrochemical Laboratory

Specializes in ion analysis using techniques like conductivity testing, ion-selective electrode (ISE) measurements and pH analysis.
Regular electrode calibration and standard solution validation ensure precision.
Common analyses include fluoride, nitrate and nitrite detection in water and other matrices.

Spectrometry Laboratory

Conducts quantitative chemical analysis based on the absorption of light, essential for material and structural testing.
Supports industries like paint manufacturing through pigment and coating analysis.
Focuses on elemental analysis and contaminant detection using techniques like ICP-OES, ICP-MS, and XRF.
Typical samples include cosmetics, food, beverages, animal feeds, fertilizers, baby formulas and fortified foods.
Capable of detecting toxic metals (e.g., As, Hg, Pb, Cd) and radioactive contaminants.

We test a wide range of items including:

  • Food products – Water, salt, sugar, flour, tea, rice, beverages, spices, baby formula, seafood
  • Construction materials – Cement, lime, clinker, gypsum, window putty
  • Metals – Steel (cast iron, stainless, alloy), aluminum products (pots, sheets)
  • Plastics & polymers – Toys, buckets, containers, syringes, paints, inks
  • Agricultural inputs – Fertilizers, animal feeds, agricultural lime
  • Industrial chemicals – Hydrochloric acid, chlorine, waterproofing agents

 

The lab is equipped with analytical instruments to ensure precise and accurate measurements, including:

• Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES)
• UV-Visible Spectrophotometer (UV-VIS)
• X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometers (XRF)
• Ion Selective Meters (ISE)
• Flame Photometers
• Spark Optical Emission Spectrophotometer (Spark OES)
In support of Kenya’s national strategy for skills development, the laboratory offers industrial attachments to students pursuing chemistry and laboratory technology. This hands-on training exposes students to real-world analytical techniques helping them bridge the gap between academic theory and industry practice.
